Volunteer

Volunteerism is at the core of Outhouse’s work. The energy and commitment that motivates voluntary work is something that we value greatly, and something that we both learn from and are inspired by.

We need people to volunteer their time, skills, experience and expertise in all the areas of our work – running of the Café and theatre space, administration functions, , general maintenance, Board work, planning and organising events, fundraising and numerous other areas.

The first inklings of creating a centre, the planning for it and the work in establishing it was all done on a voluntary basis. The current governing Board are all voluntary and in the day-to-day running of the centre there are about 20 volunteers at present. Volunteerism is embedded in what we do.

As a result of these years of experience with volunteers, Outhouse has developed very clear policies regarding volunteers, that address our duty of care, as well as our expectancies of volunteers regarding centre users and visitors, confidentiality, alcohol and drug misuse, training and development work, volunteer support and various other aspects of the day-to-day life of the centre. Everyone who comes to work in Outhouse is provided with clear guidance (which itself is a ‘living document’ and subject to update as new learning and situations present).
